During one of the many highly anticipated commercial breaks during the Super Bowl LVIII game, Universal Pictures debuted the first look trailer for its upcoming musical soon-to-be blockbuster WICKED, based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz.
The new adaptation is directed by John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In The Heights) stars Cynthia Erivo (Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman with emerald-green skin who has yet to discover her true potential as she attends Shiz University in Oz and crosses paths with popular student Glinda, played by pop icon Ariana Grande. The trailer shows the films illustrious costumes and set pieces, along with dazzling special effects and teases the show-stopping power ballad ‘Defying Gravity’.
Other cast members featured in the trailer include Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) as headmistress Madame Morrible, Critics’ Choice Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Fellow Travelers) as heartthrob Fiyero, Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s SpongeBob Squarepants) as munchkin student Boq, Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (SNL) and Bronwyn James (Harlots) as Glinda’s sidekicks Pfannee and ShenShen, and Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) as a new character Miss Coddle, Marissa Bode in her feature film debut as Elphaba’s sister Nessarose, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz.
WICKED is the first part of a two-chapter story, with the sequel set to arrive November 2025.
