Tell Me Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers stars Grace Van Patten has earned wide acclaim for her titular role in Hulu’s limited series The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. In a recent press conference, Van Patten reflected on the challenges, surprises, and emotional weight of stepping into one of the most scrutinized true-crime stories of the 21st century.

“Everything was intense and emotional and challenging,” she shared during a recent press conference. Among the most pivotal moments for her was the interrogation sequence at the end of Episode 2, as well as the finale scene where Knox confronts her prosecutor in Italy. “Everyone felt very passionate about hitting all the beats in that scene. It’s a very complicated, layered conversation.”

What struck Van Patten most, however, wasn’t just the details of the trial or the lack of evidence that defined the case. “What I found most surprising was Amanda’s attitude and the way she walks through life after going through something like this. Her ability to not let this horrible thing define her. I was so inspired and in awe of her resilience and her ability to forgive.”

Preparing to Play Amanda Knox

For Van Patten, this role marked the first time she portrayed a real person, a responsibility she did not take lightly. She recalled her initial meeting with Knox as overwhelming in the best way: “I had so many questions in my brain and it was like a matter of filtering them. I tried to ease my way in because I didn’t know how she was gonna react. Thankfully, she was so vulnerable, and then I was able to ask her anything.”

That openness, she said, was essential in helping her embody Knox’s emotional journey. “Getting to know her and understand her is what really prepared me for attempting to enter her psyche. Understanding her made me even more motivated to go there so that I could hopefully help the audience understand her a little more.”

The production also brought Van Patten back to Rome, where she had fond childhood memories of visiting Cinecittà Studios while her father worked there. Returning to the same space decades later felt surreal. “It just felt like one of those things that I was supposed to do,” she said. Even amid the demanding schedule, she relished small moments of life in Italy—morning walks, coffee runs, and unforgettable food.

Media Scrutiny, Empathy, and Social Media “What Ifs”

Much of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox explores not just the crime and trial but the global media circus that surrounded them. For star Grace Van Patten, portraying the psychological impact of that scrutiny was essential. “I just wanted to show the effects of what that does to a young woman who’s being scrutinized in the media. Especially a 20-year-old girl in a foreign country being accused of something she didn’t do. It’s very, very impactful.”

The role also changed how she approaches media narratives in her own life. “After doing this, I try and make an effort not to believe the headlines I’m reading. If I’m gonna read the headlines, I’d better read the rest of the article and I better do the research. All the information is not in one article, it takes looking at a million different sides.”

When asked how Knox’s story might have unfolded differently in the age of TikTok, Van Patten admitted, “There’s no way to really know, but I think it would definitely be much more of a conversation. Amanda may have had more of an outlet to speak her truth earlier, as well as her family. It could go either way, but I do think there would be more space for support.”

Van Patten also praised the involvement of Monica Lewinsky as a producer, noting the parallels between their experiences. “The whole reason this show is happening is because Monica really encouraged Amanda to tell her own story in her own way. Seeing those two together was so powerful, two extremely strong, brave women who have taken back the reins on their lives.”

Finding Humanity in the Story

For Grace Van Patten, the ultimate goal of the series is sparking dialogue. “As long as there’s a conversation, I feel like we did the right thing,” she said. She also emphasized that the show avoids forcing a viewpoint on audiences. “It’s very empathetic to everyone involved in the situation, and no one is painted as the villain. That’s a huge part of who Amanda is as a person—her ability to forgive everyone and understand that everyone thought they were doing the right thing.”

The experience left the actor both humbled and inspired. “It doesn’t feel like we just made a TV show,” she reflected. “It feels more important than that, like we were all helping somebody reclaim their story. And that’s beyond just a TV show. That’s why I feel so honored to be a part of it.”

Even with the weight of the subject matter, Van Patten was keen to highlight Knox’s enduring humor and positivity, qualities she worked hard to bring into her performance. “Amanda has such an amazing sense of humor about her life and life in general. We definitely felt like we had to show that.”

As audiences continue to debate and reflect on the series, Van Patten hopes they see Knox not just as a headline, but as a human being. “She was just a 20-year-old girl going through this unimaginable thing,” she said. “If we reminded people of that, then I think we did our job.”
