Prime Video’s Upload premiered its fourth and final season last week, closing out the satirical sci-fi comedy that has built a loyal fan base since its debut in 2020. For series star Allegra Edwards, who plays Ingrid Kannerman, the show has been nothing short of a career-defining experience. In conversation, Edwards reflected on her journey to acting, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and the growth she’s experienced since joining Upload.

From Theater Kid to Screen Actor

Edwards’ love of performance started early as she was inspired by her father, a Bay Area actor who balanced fundraising by day and playing Captain Hook by night. she grew up watching VHS recordings of his stage performances. “I grew up watching his performances on old VHS tapes from like 1987 of Little Shop of Horrors or Peter Pan,” she shared. “I would watch my dad transform into somebody else and that was kind of the entry point, to see that this is something that people can do.”

That inspiration only deepened when she saw live theater. “I saw a touring production of Les Misérables and there were kids on stage… little Gavroche and Cosette and the street urchins. I was amazed and a little jealous. I wanted to [be like them] reaching out to the audience, I didn’t want to be the audience!” In film, it was Pirates of the Caribbean that captured her imagination. “I remember watching that and feeling like, ‘gosh, they must be having so much fun.’ That was the first time I thought of [acting] as a big fun group project and not just escapism.”

She pursued her training seriously, studying theater and television at Pepperdine University before earning an MFA in acting from the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. After early roles on John Glaser Loves Gear, Modern Family, and a recurring role on Briarpatch, Edwards landed her breakout part on Upload.

A Serendipitous Audition

Allegra Edwards shared that she landed the role of young socialite Ingrid Kannerman after just a couple of brief self-taped auditions. “I only had two little four-minute self-tapes which got sent to New York, then to LA… The next thing I knew, I was on a flight to the table read. No chemistry test, no callback, no producer session.”

While she was over the moon to have booked a major role in the series, it came a bout of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. “I didn’t have a chemistry test, I thought they surely didn’t know how tall I was, and that they had made a mistake and they were gonna meet me and go, ‘Oh, no, no, never mind what were we thinking?’”

Thankfully, she decided to call her father the morning of the table read and he set her nerves aside. “He talked me down and reminded me that professionals made this decision, and you have to believe them when they make these choices.”

Upload premiered during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when audiences were hungry for new content. “Who could have known that during COVID, everybody had run out of Tiger King and it was time for Upload to shine,” she laughed. “Amazon released it in every language and people saw it all over the world… I don’t think we saw that coming!”

Lessons From Mentors and Co-Stars

Throughout her career, Edwards has leaned on mentors to help shape her craft. At Pepperdine, improv coach Tracy Burns pushed her beyond her comfort zone. “She understood my capabilities as a performer better than I did,” Edwards said, recalling how Burns encouraged her to explore new territory.

On Upload, co-star Robbie Amell became an unexpected source of support. “If I had a question that I was nervous about, or if I needed somebody to advocate for me, [he’d do it]. He also gave me business advice that was so crucial… he’s just very generous with his knowledge.”

Allegra Edwards also spoke warmly of Rosario Dawson, whom she worked with on Briarpatch. “We had a big funeral scene and I remember she looked at all the background actors and she made eye contact with everybody, and said, ‘Thank you all so much for being here, here’s what we kind of need and here’s what’s gonna happen.’” she explained. “There wasn’t this line separating the background actors from Rosario and the rest of the cast. She invited them into the process, and I think, as a result, probably cranked up the focus from everybody. It was really inspiring and she was so gracious.”

Finding Growth Through Upload

Reflecting on her journey from day one of the pilot to her final day on set, Edwards reflected on her increase confidence and trust in her work. “2017 Allegra? Woof!” she exclaimed. “She was just happy to get through the day. Now I feel like I can trust myself more and I’m beginning to learn my Swiss Army knife of tools… I didn’t have that before.”

As Upload closes its final chapter, Allegra Edwards departs with a deeper trust in herself, gratitude for her collaborators, and excitement for what’s ahead.
