DC Studios has just premiered its first official teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Superman. The film stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicolas Hault with direction from DC Studios’ co-chairman and co-CEO, James Gunn. Superman is set to hit theatres worldwide on July 11, 2025.
From the first moments of the trailer, the Man of Steel has seen better days. Bloodied and bruised from an apparent battle, the red-caped hero crash lands onto the frozen tundra of the Arctic, wheezing and gasping for air. As a swell of an electric guitar slowly plucking John Williams’ iconic theme from the 1978 film, we see glimpses of his alter ego Clark Kent rushing into The Daily Planet, as well as Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, and Pruitt Taylor Vince (Lady in the Lake) as Jonathan Kent.
Clark whistles and something, or someone, speeds toward him across the snow. A vehicle? Another hero? It’s Krypto! Superman’s trusty canine sidekick, adorned with his own red cape. “Home. Take Me Home,” Clark manages to say before Kyrpto bites onto his cape to drag him to safety.
We then get a glimpse of Nicolas Hault as Lex Luthor as Superman zooms by the Luthorcorp towers in Metropolis, Superman swooping in to save a girl from a crash or explosion, another show where he punches his way out of a large glass container, as we see a young boy raising a flag in the middle of an attack somewhere in the desert, calling out for Superman.
We then see the Man of Steel walking into a building where an angry crowd has gathered outside, with a view of the company logo Stagg Industries which appears in the comics, before a Green Lantern (played by Nathan Fillion, The Rookie), enters alongside Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced, Alien: Romulus) and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi, X-Men: First Class).
A quick montage includes shots of a large alien creature spitting a blaze of fire at Superman; the Fortress of Solitude emerging from the snowy tundra; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, a series of large buildings toppling over; Lex Luthor looking scuffed up; Krypto dragging Superman to safety; Superman grappling with someone in a stadium; Mr. Terrific using a force field to evade gunfire; Superman kissing Lois midair and a separate shot of Superman looking out toward the city under attack before Lois hugs him goodbye.
It sounds like a lot to take in, but the teaser comes at just under two and a half minutes and with very little dialogue or any real plot points revealed. We see multiple heroes and villains throughout, so it’s hard to say who the main antagonist will be, though it’s presumed to be Lex Luthor in some capacity.
Look, I was a moderate fan of 2013’s Man of Steel and liked Cavill’s portrayal, I was an even bigger fan of 2006’s Superman Returns and Brandon Routh’s take on the Kryptonian superhero. When they announced another reboot of the character, I couldn’t help but remain skeptical. David Corenswet is the 10th actor to play Clark Kent/Superman between the many film and television adaptations (no, I do not count the CGI Nicolas Cage cameo in The Flash), so it isn’t exactly something we haven’t seen done before.
From the looks of this trailer, which barely has any dialogue and is a true teaser, there is a reason to remain hopeful and excited for what’s to come.
