This bite-sized interview features a conversation with the delightful Carmel Amit, who stars in Buddy Games: Spring Awakening, a new comedy directed by and starring Josh Duhamel, now streaming on Paramount+. Carmel discusses how the larger-than-life, room-commanding character harkened back to her early days doing theatre, shares her insights pursuing an artistic career as a single parent, and addresses some of the misinformation and “acting gurus” out there.
“There were a couple of teachers before I went to New York to study theatre that, looking back, I wonder ‘what were they teaching?'” she explains. “Sometimes it felt like therapy or something like that, and then studying the more seriously and classical theatre opened my eyes to what it really took.”
Carmel has an extensive background in classical and dramatic theatre, with her role in “Buddy Games: Spring Awakening” being among the first of her comedic roles. In terms of what she learned during the production of the film, she said “I learned that I love comedy and I want to do more. It inspired me to take more improv classes and expand that arsenal. I consider myself more of a dramatic actor and take the craft very seriously, but [on ‘Buddy Games’] these guys were just having a good time and a light-hearted, fun movie. I discovered there’s a lot of joy in that for me.”
