This week we are joined by the hilarious and delightful Nehal Joshi who is currently starring in the new farcical comedy The Cottage, at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway. Nehal is a veteran of the Broadway stage, having performed in both plays and musicals, dramas and comedies, from classics like The Phantom of the Opera and Arthur Miller’s All My Sons to new musicals Flying Over Sunset and School of Rock.
Nehal talks with us about his experience so far in The Cottage and how every night feels like a fresh performance, especially when the incredibly prop-heavy show has things go wrong. He also talks about how the once standard type-casting becomes less and less common, and the importance of collaboration and creating your own work when others don’t give you the chance to do so.
“A lot of my work recently has just come with being friends with people, and they like my work enough they say ‘hey, do you wanna do this?’. Creating your work is really important and know what’s happening out there. I’d see shows and know what parts I was right for, and tell my team ‘hey, this theater is doing this show, I’d love to be seen for it’. You have to be your biggest advocate. You are your business. You have to be the one who is your best marketer, your biggest critic and your biggest fan.”
