This week we are joined by Adam McArthur, the voice behind dozens of beloved characters in animation and video games from Yuji Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen, Koku Hanabata in My Hero Academia, and Marco Diaz in Star vs. the Forces of Evil. During our conversation, McArthur reflects on his multi-faceted career, the importance of interests and hobbies separate from acting, and the ever-present imposter syndrome he continues to experience despite his success.
“When you start out as an actor you have this hustle mentality, you have to work really hard. You have be scrappy. You have to fight for everything and when you start having stuff you think ‘wait, this can’t be right’ and it takes a long time to get out of that. It might sound weird but when you get to a certain point in your career, the challenge is not so much ‘how do I find work?’it’s being happy with what you have so you aren’t continuously chasing the next thing. You won’t be happy if that’s what you’re doing, you have to look around and say thank you.”
