We had the pleasure of sitting down with Alex Wyse, who is currently starring in the new Broadway play Good Night, Oscar, which I had the pleasure of seeing a few days before our conversation. Alex is known for his multi-year stint on The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as multiple episode arcs on Iron Fist, Masters of Sex and most recently co-writing and co-directing the new horror comedy, which boasts an impressive LGBTQ+ cast, including Frankie Grande, Troy Iwata, Travis Coles and Michael Urie. In our conversation, he shared how he ended up taking over the role of Max from his good friend Ethan Slater in Good Night, Oscar, how he’s dealt with self-esteem and identity issues, and his experience working alongside Emmy-winner Sean Hayes.
Our conversation with Alex Wyse also delved into the challenges he’s faced in an industry dominated by social media and rigid beauty standards. “I felt like the industry was telling me I should be a certain kind of thing. It’s taking me and has taken me a long time to learn that I’m just supposed to be myself,” he shared.
“I’ve gotten all these cues iver the years that I have to ‘be straighter’ and drop my voice and butch it up in order to get these roles, but all that’s ever done for me is hinder me and prevented me from finding the kind of work that I want to be doing.” Wyse has admirably tackled these challenges head-on. He emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and self-love, highlighting that true beauty lies in embracing one’s uniqueness.
Alex Wyse then delved into his venture into co-writing and co-directing the horror comedy “Summoning Sylvia”, which he admitted was an ambitious undertaking, as he described it as “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” The horror-comedy genre allowed Wyse to explore his creativity in new ways, blending humor and suspense to create an entertaining cinematic experience.
In an industry that often demands conformity, Alex truly stands as an inspiring figure, unapologetically embracing his individuality and using his platform to encourage others to do the same.
Summoning Sylvia is available to purchase or view on-demand on all major platforms.
